The Responsiblities of Being a Dental Hygenist
Working in a dentist’s office is hard work. It does not matter if a person is the dentist of if they have one of the many dental hygiene jobs that are available. Everyday a person with a job like this has to deal with the mouths and teeth of complete strangers. Sometimes working as a dental hygienist is not that bad. There are times when people come in and have perfectly healthy teeth and a clean mouth. These are the times that the job is great. However, there are others times when patients come in who have not been taught proper oral hygiene and their mouths are a mess.
A person must do many tasks when they decide to work as dental hygienists. Because there are so many dental hygiene jobs available, it is important to be proficient in all the tasks that are required of a hygienist. Some of the tasks that a dental hygienist must be proficient at are as follows:
1. Removing plaque and build-up from a patient’s teeth
2. Cleaning and flossing a patient’s teeth
3. Making patients aware of the importance of proper oral hygiene (daily brushing and flossing techniques)
4. X-raying teeth for dental pictures and developing X-ray films of teeth
5. Know how to use dental instruments properly as so not to hurt patients
6. Help with root planning for periodontal therapy
7. Assist dentist with administering anesthetics (depending on what state the person is employed in)
8. Assist dentist with applying fillings, removing stitches and making diagnoses (depending on the state the person is employed in)
Being a dental hygienist is a tough job. There are many demands that a person must fill in order to do the job properly. If a person wants to make a better life for themselves and loves to help people, then applying for one of the many dental hygiene jobs that are available in today’s job market is a great way to a satisfying new career.
Becoming a dental hygienist does not take that long to do. In addition, once you have your dental hygiene degree, the job opportunities are endless. You will always be able to find dental hygiene jobs, no matter where you chose to live.
