The Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional practitioner who manages and directs nursing care activities during the patient’s hospital stay and coordinates care planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient / customer driven approach.

Patient Attendant – Part Time Rotating D/N

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To provide constant alert observation of infant, children and adolescent patients in order to ensure patient safety. To perform direct and indirect patient care activities as delegated by and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Provides constant and alert observation for each assigned patient. Protect patients’ safety and security by preventing patient harm to self, harm from others, harm to others and flight risk.

2.Provides companionship for patients through listening, conversing, reading and participating in age appropriate recreational activities.

3.Maintains accurate patient attendant records on required documentation form(s)

4.Performs direct care activities which are limited to the following and may be performed only as delegated by the Registered Nurse (RN):
A.Personal hygiene needs: bed making, changing clothes, oral care, bath, diapering, and incontinence skin care per care plan.
B.Nutritional needs: Order meals, pass/collect meal trays, set up meals, assist with feeding, bottle feed, offer fluids and record calorie counts.
C.Elimination needs: give/remove bedpan/urinal and notify the RN, collect urine or stool specimen as ordered, record I & O and empty/change suction canisters.
D.Take patients for walks and/ or to playroom per care plan and orders.
E.Vital signs for specified patients with parameters delineating at what point to contact the RN immediately.
F.Respiratory needs: cough and deep breath, incentive spirometer, re-application of nasal cannula/mask.
G.Perform CVC emergency care as required.
H.Head circumference, anthropometrics (height, weight and girth) per standards and orders.
I.Assist with positioning and transferring patients.
J.Assist patients with ADL’s in partnership with patient and family.
K.Assist RN with holding for procedures (e.g. IV’s, urinary catheters, etc)
L.Assist with application of behavioral & medical/surgical restraints. Observe restrained patients.

5.Actively participates as a front-line example of extra-ordinary customer service and satisfaction. Participates in any and all customer service initiatives that are appropriate. Utilizes a customer focus to complete assignments in a courteous, attentive, enthusiastic and safe manner.

6.Ensures that work areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective and efficient environment for employees, patients and families. Attend required CHMCC training sessions, including radiation safety, laboratory safety, bloodborne pathogens and OSHA. Comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.
